Everyone Loves!

March 8th, 2007
Check it out on DeviantArt!

What comes to your mind when you read that title? :D World peace? Bob Marley? Hippies on a bus tossing flowers in the air?

I was given an assignment in a class the other day to take a picture of something "ugly" in a beautiful way. So after thinking about it for a while I first took shots of a bunch of burnt rice stuck to the bottom of a pot. :P They came out alright but I wasn't really that satisfied. Then I tried taking a few while looking through the center of a roll of TP and that was just "ok" too.

I was glancing around the Box just trying to get more ideas...when I saw it! Sitting patiently on a shelf, and I just giggled out loud with glee! :D Seriously, every time I see a slinky, I always picture Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura 2 hopping and dancing down the steps of a temple singing: "Everyone loves a slinky, a slinky, a slinky! Everyone loves a slinky, GO slinky GO!" I love it! XD

So the picture I ended up taking was the perspective inside of a slinky, with some light shining in the background. I thought it came out great! Click on that picture above to see a larger version. I was able to take it with my manual Nikon camera and develop it in a photo lab. It's been a while since I've done that!

Oh yes, and we also had to write a haiku for our photo. :P Here is what I wrote:

Everyone loves me,
I do fall gracefully
from the highest stair.

What do you think? It fits the emotions of a slinky, yes? :D

In other news, I am now a Worker Bee for the Quilting Bee, woot! I'm very excited and I'm going to do my best to be a great help to the others in the club. :) I also have updated the layout design of my quilt and re-organized everything in it! Now it will be easier for me to update as well as any visitor to smoothly browse. Yay!

Check out Virb!

Oh and the new community Virb has finally opened its doors to the public! It is another social website that combines music, videos and blogging. For example, like Last.fm, you can download a little plugin for iTunes so it can catch your most recently played music. Looks-wise, it has the flexibility of MySpace combined with the somewhat beauty of Facebook. I think it mixes well. I was fortunate enough to snag a beta invite from Joey and try it out before it went public. The profile styling options are very neat and not ugly at all like MySpace. My eyes bleed when I look at MySpace. Even my own profile, which I tried to fix up as best as I could for kicks, is still as ugly as hell.

But I will agree with Jordan that their new index page is very cool, although I think it could use some spice. Maybe more graphics aside from just pictures and rounded buttons. They are still new so I'm not giving a final judgment just yet. I see this becoming big eventually though, like most social sites are. I'm not sure how active I'll be. Facebook has always been my favorite, don't know why. But if you end up making a profile on there, friend me! :)

That reminds me. Today may be a podcast recording day, hoorah! Anyone interested in hearing discussion on all these community sites popping up? Give your opinion here if you like, whether you love them or hate them, your favorites, etc. I may quote you on the show if that's ok. This would be an interesting subject to discuss.

A purple, glittery dog would be awesome! It’s such a lovely shade… When I used to show my horses, I always happened to be one of those girls that glittered their horse’s mane and tail and rump and hooves…

I wish I knew why my RSS feed was giving you errors. I wish I could figure out why… I wish that when you didn’t check my site at the XHTML site it didn’t say there were 130 errors… lol. But I don’t and I don’t know how to fix them. I am not PHP knowledgable yet… And can’t seem to find a tutorial that answers my questions and helps me fix my errors correctly. Know any do tell!

I love that photo of the slinky by the way and yeah, Jim Carrey’s quote is perfect! If I wasn’t so scared of signing on to my Deviantart account and finding a bunch of “you stole this piece or that” from someone I’d favourite it. My best friend is a photographer, her passion. It’s always nice to see other’s works… Especialy when they don’t always contain kids.

I’ll be watching for the podcast… ;)

Scrouch is an excellent and avid photographer, and I can tell just from hanging out with him (and being a film student… film IS just a bunch of linked pictures) that the above photo is quite a good one!

Lighting for teh win.

Oh, and srsly, if you’re srsly into photography, manual is the only legit way to go. Auto sucks for actual photography.

The picture: I think is perfect and the haiku matches very well! You’re right a slinki doesn’t look beautiful until it moves down the stairs, initially its just a load of metal coiled!

The VIRB site looks lovely, it’s got a very fresh theme too it. I find myspace too much for my brain to handle: I prefer facebook too. As opposed to myspace you can pretty much be safe in the knowledge that your friends profile won’t crash your browser there!

That photo is really cool :D! the haiku fits it perfectly.

I really like Virb, as compared to other profile sites. It seems to have more flexibility and clean look, but still very advanced and beginner user friendly.

Melissa Mar 09, 2007

@Arien: Oooh, I never heard of doing that to horses! That must have looked really pretty, hehe, I totally would have done that too! ^_^ I’ll find something for you on validation, etc…if I can’t find anything…I’ll help you myself! :D And glad you liked the photo, yay! ^_^

@Dan: Aww, thanks! :D And yeah the camera used to take that photo is manual, but I probably will have to sell it. :( I need money and I doubt I’ll ever get much more into photography than I already am.

@Carly: Thank you! And I agree with you about the metal coil of the slinky…looks so much better in motion! Yeah, MySpace is just…insane, hehe. I hope it either fizzles out eventually or the coders for the site get smart and make it better. :P

@Angela: Yay thanks! I agree, Virb really does help out the advanced and the beginner. Something MySpace definitely lacks. :P <3

Oh I love the idea you chose with the slinky. That is so creative! I never would’ve thought to do something like that.

Yay for moderator-type positions on the web. Especially for big communities. That’s really awesome that you get to be a Worker Bee. I don’t know much about the quilting bee but I see it on a lot of sites and I think it’s super cute.

I also like Virb. I think they’re on their way to great success.

By the way, I adore your site.

Srsly, if you’re into photography, have a camera with manual focus. Most good cameras will let you turn off auto-focus and do it manually.

Manual focus gives you so many more artistic options than auto does. Sometimes you want to create blur, or sometimes you want to have a really narrow, long depth of field, and auto focus won’t let you do so many things that you need to to get a really awesome photo.

Jessica Mar 09, 2007

How ever thought you could make a slinky look good like that. But that’s a really neat picture done of one. The haiku sounds really good and matches with a slinky perfectly. :D I forgot about Ace Ventura 2! HA HA! I’d probably still be sitting on the couch thinking of what to take a picture, so very creative idea.

By the way, I recall you wondering where I got my desktop. :D It actually took me a while to relocate it. The website is http://danieljansson.com/ and there are many others too!

I just got home from 300. It was bodies (disrupted speak for awesome).

I think I’m wet. From taking a shower, of course. Nothing else. Nothing about….300! Who said 300? I never said anything about 300. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m wet because I was taking a shower… errr…. I digress… SUPERdigress…

Go see it as soon as you can. It’s just too awesome to miss.

Jeni Mar 11, 2007

I don’t think I would have ever guessed that that was a slinky! Very cool project and insight.

Kim Mar 11, 2007

Your project was great! I liked that you had the slinky with your presentation as well. I’m gonna have to check out that Virb. And I agree with Dan.. 300 is awesome!

P.S. now I have the slinky song stuck in my head, haha.

Melissa Mar 12, 2007

@Caitlin: Thank you! ^_^ And yeah the Q*Bee is lots of fun, you should join! It really is a great community. :)

@Dan: LOL! I sooo want to go see 300! I’ll have to when I get back from Spring Break. :D

@Jessica: Hehe thanks! :D And yay, thank you for the link! That art is really amazing…

@Jeni: Thank you! ^_^

@Kim: Thanks Kim! I really need to go see that movie, hehe, been hearing way too many great things about it. :) And the slinky song was stuck in my head for like two days after the presentation. XD

I love the slinky photo and the haiku with it is adorable! :)
