Attack of the Splogs!

March 21st, 2008
Splogger??

A couple days ago I discovered my website is being attacked by sploggers. To me that word sounds more like a fuzzy little alien you'd find in a game rather than what it really means. And yes, I drew that little green guy. :P

Splogging is when content is stolen via some automated process (also called blog scraping) and copied to an artificial blog that is usually filled with ads and affiliate links. By consistently filling this blog with stolen content, the "splogger" is able to gain money through ad clicks and searches along with an increased page rank. Quite the evil thing to do.

I had been checking my Technorati page and noticed a few sites that had duplicated my entries (some even minutes after I posted!). I didn't think much of it at first because they had linked it back to my original post.

However, after I researched it a bit more and discovered the true "identity" of what those sites were, I started to wonder just how many "splogs" were out there siphoning my content, because most likely not all of them are "nice" and have link backs. I'm not sure if I can really find every scraper out there, but maybe I could at least prevent it from happening to my future posts.

One way to locate copied content is to (obviously) google a few phrases. Since that could get pretty boring and drawn out, there are sites like CopyScape.com that searches for duplicate content by just typing in a URL. The only downside to that particular site is that you need a premium account to see more than a few results.

Luckily, I discovered a great resource with steps on how to prevent splogging on your site: 10 Steps to A More Splog-Free Wordpress Blog. It is quite informative and offers lots of ways to discover if you're being splogged and methods on how to try to prevent it from happening.

One awesome tool that is linked from that article is the CopyFeed plugin for Wordpress! It can add additional content to the end of an entry in your feed, like a copyright message for example. What I really like is that it can also add a digital fingerprint, which is a unique string of numbers that you can then use to search the web for to find if that entry was scraped. Pretty clever. :D

So if you're reading this entry on a feed reader, you should see some extra things at the end of it. :) Hopefully it will work! If anyone has any suggestions for more ways on combating sploggers (not cute aliens!) please let me know!

Thanks for this, I have a feeling this has been happening to me.

Sarah Mar 21, 2008

Wow, I never heard of this. But it’s quite interesting. I hope it never happens to me though.

When I first started my blog, I got lots of pings from websites like that. Made me mad, and I looked up the sites with WHOIS and sent emails to the hosts. I don’t know if it did anything, but I know that since then I haven’t gotten any sploggers! lol

OMG! This has happened to be a few times recently! I didn’t think much about it. I did visit the site to see what was up, and saw my entry duplicated there, and felt really confused about it. I remember wondering what it was all about, but got sidetracked and forgot about it. I had no idea it actually had a name and what it was all about. How weird! I checked this post on my feed reader and did see the extra information at the bottom, so it works! I would have never known what this was all about had it not been for you!

Splogging. Sploggers. So that’s what they’re called. Yah, I ran into that problem too so I tried to make it harder for them by making my wordpress registered members only. So that I wouldn’t get there ping comments. I’m going to add that copyfeed plugin. Thank you for the information.

I love your site by the way.

Ann Mar 22, 2008

ohhhHHHHHhhh, so that’s what it was. Thanks, that’s really helpful, I’ll watch out for more stuff like that. I didn’t really get what it was all about actually, so I left it how it was, but I’ll check up now.
And that “splogger” of yours is too cute!

Brigitte Mar 22, 2008

I’ve noticed that a lot, too. Interesting! Sadly I have a WP hosted blog so I can’t install plugins, but perhaps WP will do it as a service to its members ;p

Emsz Mar 22, 2008

It would be totally funny if they splogged this entry as well :P

Hev Mar 22, 2008

How rude! That just pisses me off and it isn’t even happening to me.

Bran Mar 22, 2008

This was happening to me years ago. It’s one of the reasons why I quit blogging. I know the anti-spam tools are much more sophisticated now. Heh, the name splog bothers me a bit :D eww

Miriam Mar 22, 2008

Hi! I’m really glad that my post on ways to stop sploggers has helped you.

I love your blog’s design! Did you do it?

Noellium Mar 22, 2008

Ahh, splogs. The first couple of paragraphs of one of my entries were snagged by a couple of splogs (but they credited me :P). I’d say that’s the only problem I’ve had with them.

Melissa Mar 22, 2008

Hi! I’m really glad that my post on ways to stop sploggers has helped you.

I love your blog’s design! Did you do it?

It really has, thank you so much for posting it! :D And thank you, yes I did create it!

…but they credited me…

The same for me, but what about entries that didn’t credit? If some do, I bet a large majority don’t. =/

Adam J. Cohen Mar 22, 2008

Hah, so THAT’s what those are called…

I’ve been seeing the ping-backs on my Askimet filter, but I didn’t know what was what on them… Interesting… I’m going to have to add that plug-in with the copyright and all when I get a chance within the next few days or so…

Vera Mar 23, 2008

Oh so THAT’s what those blogs were doing. It happened to me recently with two of my blog posts. I found it extremely odd, but since they linked back to my original post I didn’t much pursue the idea. Despite the fact that my post about how to get rid of a grasshopper ended up on a blog relating to methods of murder O_o

I’ll be sure to install the plugin though, thanks for the heads up. :)

Rose Mar 23, 2008

Hmm. I have these dudes too, but I didn’t know they had a name. I just mark their trackback things as spam and forget about it :P

Rose Mar 23, 2008

hee, as soon as I posted this comment, I checked my moderation queue and had a new sploggy trackback!

Woo!

Nanda Mar 24, 2008

I have heard of this before, yes, but I had never paid any attention to it. It’s awful isn’t it, that people write scripts or whatever they do, to copy your site’s content and earn money from it. I hate that. I hope it will not happen again.

Lisa Mar 25, 2008

wow, I did not know stuff like this happens.
Kinda odd though, lol :P I don’t think anyone is splogging my blog though, I haven’t really been that active in blogging lately.. I’ll check it out though :)

Britney Mar 25, 2008

I have never heard of it. Thanks for sharing. Your little splogger guy is super cute though lol.

Cristina Mar 25, 2008

I’m glad you brought this to our attention. I had no idea this kind of thing went on, but yet it doesn’t surprise me. Geez, as if spam isn’t enough. :P

Jessica Mar 28, 2008

I have been reading about this a lot. I am sure I have content out there somewhere. But I have too much offline to really worry about it.
