Summer Reading

June 23rd, 2008

Today I stopped off at the bookstore and picked up four new books! Well, three are new...one I have read before. I especially enjoy the genres of fantasy and science fiction. If you know of any good reads in those categories, please feel free to suggest!

Here is the list:

  1. The Time Traveler's Wife ~ "Henry De Tamble is a Chicago librarian with "Chrono Displacement" disorder; at random times, he suddenly disappears without warning and finds himself in the past or future, usually at a time or place of importance..."
  2. The Host ~ "A species of altruistic parasites has peacefully assumed control of the minds and bodies of most humans, but feisty Melanie Stryder won't surrender her mind to the alien soul called Wanderer."
  3. Wicked 2 ~ "Holy Cathers is not the same person she was almost a year and a half ago. After discovering her connection to an ancient legacy of witches, Holly has accepted her destiny..." (The sequel to Witch & Curse.)
  4. Wicked ~ "Elphaba, better known as the Wicked Witch of the West, is not wicked; nor is she a formally schooled witch. Instead, she's an insecure, unfortunately green Munchkinlander who's willing to take radical steps to unseat the tyrannical Wizard of Oz." (Not related to the previous book.)

The book I've read before is The Time Traveler's Wife and I remember loving it. After recommending it to Jess, I finally caved and bought it for myself. I'm already a 3rd of the way through and it's still as good as I remember. :D

As you can see, I'm really into a certain type of book, hehe. I love books that swirl you into a different universe and leave you wistful after finishing them. This isn't the only kind of book I like, I also enjoy historical fiction (like The Killer Angels) and non-fiction (like Lionheart) and lots of others. I just read in trends. :P

Yay, books! I haven’t got any lined up for the summer yet. I suppose a trip to Chapters is order! I should probably get one before I leave for camping Thursday afternoon, as well!

Shen-Shen Jun 23, 2008

I’m a fan of the whole being whisked away to a different universe too..! :D

I haven’t read a book in ages, perhaps I’ll read something this summer!

The Time Traveller’s Wife sounds really interesting. And of course I’m going to be very biased about The Host; even though I don’t read that much, it’s still one of the best books I’ve come across. But that’s my opinion. I’m sure you’ll like it, as you liked Twilight, even though the storyline and everything in The Host is in some cases miles better than Twilight. ^_^

I need to start reading again. Been on a bit of a book limbo right now, deciding what I want. Haha.

Oooh, I just had to comment on this. I don’t know if you’ve read much (or anything) by Robert A. Heinlein, but Friday and Stranger in a Strange Land are my favourites. Another one of my favourite authors (quite possibly my number one) is Dan Simmons. Read the Hyperion series (all four of them) and Illium & Olympos. As you can tell, I’m very much into science fiction myself. :D

Amber Jun 24, 2008

I should probably take a leaf out of your book and stop reading chick lit. :P

Gabrielle Jun 24, 2008

I quite liked Wicked and Gregory Maguire’s other fiction is fun to read (e.g. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister). Have you tried The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? Piers Anthony (hit or miss for people)?

I’m on a Bret Easton Ellis and memoirs kick so I can’t really suggest anything else off the top of my head. :/

You just reminded me that I need to pick up loads of books before I go camping!
Thank You! :D ;)

I read the host a month ago and it was awesome.

That’s good to hear! I loved the series and have heard rave reviews about The Host, especially how much better it apparently is because it’s more written for a dults.

As you can tell, I’m very much into science fiction myself.

Ooh, thank you so much for the suggestions, Joyce! I will definitely look into those. :D I really do need to expand my knowledge of science fiction books.

I should probably take a leaf out of your book and stop reading chick lit.

XD Leaf…chick lit… heehee!

Have you tried The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? Piers Anthony (hit or miss for people)?

I haven’t! I’ve seen the movie for the first book, but of course we all know books are better. ;) I’ll be checking those two out for sure. :D

Meggan Jun 24, 2008

OMG, you haven’t tried the Hitchhiker’s Guide series? SO GOOD. The books have a definite sort of humor that I could see some people not liking, but I love it. I just started re-reading So Long and Thanks For All The Fish.

You might also like the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. It has the whole “other world” thing and all. OH - even better, the His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman. THESE BOOKS ARE GLORIOUS. Seriously. They rival Harry Potter in awesomeness, which I know does not seem possible but YE GODS I could not put them down.

I myself am on a huge Agatha Christie kick lately. They are great books for public transportation since they aren’t very big or heavy - I’d read Harry Potter since it would last me longer, but the books are so GIGANTIC I wouldn’t be able to carry anything else in my bag. I never truly figure out the mystery before the end, even though I’ve read like 25 of them.

Melissa Jun 24, 2008

Ooh! I thoroughly enjoyed the silly humor that was the movie, so if the book is like it at all I’m sure I’ll be all about it. :D I didn’t know it was a series, w00t!

Thanks for the awesome suggestions, Meggan. :D With all these good books I might actually pull off the “28 books in 2008″ activity online! XD

I read The Time Traveler’s Wife. It was really lovely and made me cry quite a few times.

I admire you for being able to read those books. I have quite a few which are on my “to read” list, but end up getting left alone because well…. anime X_X yeah… shame on me.

Meggan Jun 24, 2008

Yeah, Hitchhiker’s Guide is a “trilogy,” even though there are five books. ^_^ Several of the later ones say something like, “The fourth in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy” in the intro.

Seriously though, cannot recommend His Dark Materials enough. The first one is The Golden Compass, second is The Subtle Knife, and the third is the Amber Spyglass. I think they get better and better as they go - the third is my favorite. :D

Anime is just as good! Do you mean books? I love TV series, myself. :D

The first one is The Golden Compass…

OMG, I positively ADORE the movie of it and have wanted to get the book! YAY! Gah, I have so many books to add to my wish list now. XD

That’s good to hear! I loved the series and have heard rave reviews about The Host, especially how much better it apparently is because it’s more written for a dults.

It’s written for adults, but really I didn’t see much difference in the content when compared to Twilight. I suppose all the freaky sci-fi stuff could be considered as ‘for adults’, but I understood every bit of it and I’m just a wee 15 year old! xD I must say that her writing has definitely improved since Twilight, which makes The Host so much nicer to read; no pointless sub-plots or characters that get in the way.

My mum worships The Hitch Hiker’s Guide. I’ve kinda grown up with Douglas Adams’ nonsense and such. The film was completely stupid though, if I remember rightly.. the book is miles better. =]

Regina Jun 24, 2008

I definitely need to read more this summer, I haven’t had time to do a lot of reading during the school year.

Josh Jun 26, 2008

The host sounds good. There’s a movie called The Host that is AWESOME. I guess this post is about books though :)
