We went to see the new Indiana Jones movie over the weekend and, being a fan of the original trilogy, I have mixed feelings about this fourth in the series. I'm really picky about movies at times, hehe, so I don't think my tastes are often close to the average opinion.
No spoilers, but be cautious just in case!
Overall, I liked it! The fighting, sound effects, and quips were very characteristic of the previous Indy movies. It was also pretty cool to see ol' Harrison Ford jumping around and cracking the whip! Now that I think about it, he really didn't use his whip as often as he did in the other movies.
But hey, at least his hat was still an important part of being "Indy"!
Now, if you've ever seen any of the Indy movies you'll know that they are notorious for being sort of unrealistic, per say.
That's just to be expected and what really made the series, in my opinion. Indiana always escapes from insane situations and does incredible stunts that would most likely make any ordinary human being go splat like a bug on a windshield.
With that in mind, I think this fourth movie was a bit too over the top in that unrealistic setting. Sure it's about 20 years later for Indy, but good god! Some of the explosions and crazy scenes he survives had me hearing a lot of "whatever!" comments from around the theater. Of course, those were followed by lots of laughter, because it's obvious that George Lucas meant those scenes to be outrageous. But damn.
You'll understand what I mean if you see it.
The story was a little choppy at parts and I feel like some scenes were cut short. It also made it somewhat predictable and less of a thrilling suspense as the old ones were. Makes me wonder if there's going to be an extended version, since the movie was already two hours long.
All in all, I enjoyed it and it was a nice ending to Indy's adventures. It was as close as it could get to the original trilogy, considering how hard it must have been for the filmmakers to not use all kinds of crazy technology to spice it up to "modern standards". Keeping it simple retained some of the series' unique qualities.
Go see it in the theater if you get the chance! Indiana's last hoorah!

LOL! Omg, me too.
Especially at the end…almost exactly like how the X-Files movie does it.
Lawl, too true.
He was great! He has less of a “sidekick” role as previous “kids” in the movies did, but he pulls off his character very well. I’m not surprised they’re going to make another Indy-related movie with him, but I highly doubt it will live up to (or be as popular) as it’s predecessors. I’d still go see it though.
