A Million Things!

March 31st, 2007

My bento box is being shipped from Japan this week! Hooray! :D I'm so excited! I was even able to find some Pocky (in chocolate and strawberry) to prepare for its arrival. Now if only I could find a Japanese market somewhere, or at least some place with decent oriental food choices. Walmart just has the canned stuff. If anyone has suggestions, let me know!

Notepad++

I just started using Notepad++ last week and I must say, it's probably the best text editor I've ever used. I went on a rampage to find a new one ever since I had someone make a negative comment to me about using Dreamweaver. Honestly, I have no idea what is so bad about using that program. It's not like I care about the rest of its bloated features aside from what I like. All I appreciated about it was that it had colored text, find & replace, a file browser, and FTP all-in-one. I'd rather not go on about my opinions on this program, I've already done that before. But enough ranting! :) I would recommend Notepad++ to anyone, with the file browser plugin, of course. :)

Another neato program I came across recently is Launchy! Cute name, I think! It is an open source keystroke launcher for Windows. Once it's installed, you just press ALT and Spacebar and up pops a cute little rectangle, like a large text box. You type stuff in there and it will find things for you on your computer, on other websites, on Google, hell you can even check the weather! XD There are also cool themes being developed for it too, so you can match it with however your desktop is set up. Quite cool! Here's what it looks like for me:

Launchy!

I'm not usually one that gets random programs to do little things or be tiny background helpers. I can't even use widgets because I rarely see my desktop! There is always something on it, from design programs to games, my computer never sleeeeeps! XD I actually was turning off my computer last night, shutting down all of my programs, when my wallpaper practically scared me to death! XD I had forgotten I'd changed it to a very pretty phoenix that is extremely colorful. But all that aside, I've already used Launchy several times when I'm feeling too lazy to click more buttons then I'd like. So try it out! :D

Other little newsy things. I've added lots of new links with unique descriptions, especially the dailies section. I stalked people's websites until I found out interesting things about them. So if you are one of my dailies, go see! :D

Perfection

This week I was also accepted into New Millennium and Despair so hurrah! And I also must plug Perfection, we need more amazing web designers! Please consider applying if you have a 1337 website, but make sure you follow the guidelines before you submit. :) The gallery only accepts personal websites and blogs. Not portfolios, I can't stress this enough, lol. You can have a portfolio as a section of your site but that is all. The majority of it should be personal content. Also, another community, Snark is shaping up to be a very fun forum to be involved in, so join that too if you like! :D

Whew. Lots to blog about. Maybe I should start posting more often! XD

One last thing before I go...Dad is coming home. :) Not for good yet, he'll be on leave for my university graduation in May. But still...I'm glad for my family, especially my mom. I can't imagine what she has to face every day being so far away from him. I thought I could empathize with her more because of my own long distance relationship, but for her it's so much harder because this time, Dad doesn't have access to email or a phone as often as he did when he went to Uzbekistan back in 2002. I can understand a teeny bit, but never fully.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! :) I also hope I didn't get to text-y in this post! XD Imagine what it would have been like without pictures...could you have handled the madness??

There’s a small market next to CB&S Bookstore. I’m going there today to check it out. Then there’s a HUGE market on 50, past the mall, when 50 turns into 2 lanes. It’s on the left and has gigantic white statues right on the road. It’s got everything: Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, etc. Food, kitchen stuffs, fresh food (the meat is kinda creepy looking), movies, nicknacks, and so on. If you pass Florida Oriental Trading (an anime store), you’ve gone too far. There are a lot of other markets in that area, but I haven’t been in them. Oh, and FOT has a nice selection of Pocky.

Caitlin Mar 31, 2007

Oh my goodness. Thanks for showing Notepad++. I totally just downloaded it and I’m so happy, yay!

I’m glad your bento box is on its way. I’m still really curious about it but I honestly don’t think I would use a bento even if I got one.

I’m glad your dad is coming home! That must be hard not being able to contact him. I don’t know if I could handle that. I give your mom a lot of credit.

Lexi Mar 31, 2007

You’ve gotta take pictures of your bento box when you get it. I’ve always wanted to see how big they are in comparison to household items. :) Pocky!! It’s sooo good. The first time I bought it, Joey looked at it and was all “Eww..chocolate covered biscuits?” “Not THOSE biscuits, more of a crispy stick.” “Still sounds gross.” Guess who ended up eating practically the whole box? I’ll give ya a hint, it wasn’t me. ;)

I’m happy your Dad is coming home for a little while. It’s gotta be hard on your Mom.

Perry Mar 31, 2007

Mmmmmm bento…

Notepad++ is good, but I prefer Notepad2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notepad2) as a very light-weight text editor. I haven’t used Dreamweaver in quite awhile but I’ve always liked it. Actually, I haven’t actually built a web-site in a very long time. Not sure I can even spell HTML any more… :)

As for launchers, I can recommend two. A very slick, nice looking, (and free) launcher I use is sTabLauncher (www.stablauncher.com). For more serious work, including support for scripting, I use ActiveWords (www.activewords.com). Both are excellent.

That’s great that your dad is coming home!

Cristina Mar 31, 2007

I just downloaded Notepad++ as I was working on my new layout. It’s so so nice! It actually understands the languages I type in where as regular Notepad is all WTF?! It’s great!

I may give Launchy a try, Idk. I’m already trying to use the features more my my Google homepage, lol.

Let me ask you something, do you honestly think I would have a chance at getting accepted at Perfection? I’ve thought about possibly applying there but I am not sure if I’m good enough.

I’m so happy for you that your dad is coming home. Warm fuzzies all around! :D

Arien Mar 31, 2007

Everything you said sounds great. I’ll have to take a look at that Notepad++.

Yay for Bento! Mine arrives tomorrow!! I’m so excited!! :gb:

Melissa Mar 31, 2007

@Mallory: Oh sweet, thanks! :D I’ll definitely have to check both of those places out. I was so worried because I googled for a long time trying to find places nearby and couldn’t come up with anything. :( Hooray, now I can! ^_^

@Caitlin: Yay, you’re welcome! Hehe, I’ve never been much of a lunchbox person myself either, but I know that if I get something super cute like this it may encourage me to want to use it more! Especially how I’ve seen so many websites and blogs now that are dedicated to showing off cute bento pictures every day! ^_^ And thanks about my dad, my mom definitely deserves a lot of credit, I don’t think she realizes she does…

@Lexi: Thanks! And yeaaah, I will take pics! :D And I’ll put it next to something comparable too, hehe! LOL about Joey that’s hilarious! XD Silly boys that don’t like to try things! XD

@Perry: Hmm, Notepad2 is interesting. Do you know if it has a file browser plugin? That’s what really hooked me onto the other one. And oooh, I’ll have to go check those launcher things out! I didn’t really know that this kind of program existed, they’re fun! ^_^

@Cristina: Yay, glad you like it! :D Hehe, I’m not fully sure yet if I’ll continue to use Launchy but for now its really fun, hehe! I’ll email you in a sec…and YAY for warm fuzzies! ^_^

@Arien: Yaaaay! OMG TAKE PICTURES!!! :D

Bubs Mar 31, 2007

Target has ok sushi. Try and find an oriental market :)

Thanks so much for plugging Perfection! :gb:

Melissa Mar 31, 2007

I totally need to! XD Hehe and no problem for the plug! We need more super cool sites. :)

exene Mar 31, 2007

Wow a bento box. i want a cute one :gb: I think a bento box is the only thing that would make me want to cook..hehe. This is the first time I ever heard of notepad++ hmmm sounds interesting maybe I’ll use it for my next site update. I don’t think my site is good enough for now for those elite sites.

Melissa Mar 31, 2007

Lol, me too about the bento box! That’s why I’m getting it so I can make myself learn to cook better, haha! XD

Angela Mar 31, 2007

Awww yay for your Dad coming home! Thats awesome :D!

I got accepted to Perfection, but of course I’m sure you know that :P. Weee for cherry slushies and cats! Haha!

I love notepad++, it is the bestest thing since sliced bread for designing sites hehe.

Rosemarie Mar 31, 2007

*wriggles around a bit for ya*

Jessica Apr 01, 2007

I applied to joine Perfection… Wasn;lt accepted. Oh well. And Despair. I am there. But as you will see the comments don’t come as they should.

It’s Dr Pepper not Dr. Pepper lmao! :gb:

Melissa Apr 01, 2007

@Angela: Hehe thanks! ^_^ And GRATS on Perfection, I was rooting for you all the way, woohoo! :D And yay for Notepad++, sliced bread is definitely a close second! XD

@Rose: Haha! I figured that bit described you best. ^_^

@Jessica: You’ll get there! I don’t think I remember you applying I must have missed you. :( And yeah I was wondering about the comments thing. I still like it so far though! ^_^ Maybe not for getting comments, maybe more for just visiting new sites! LOL I’ll go change that other thing! XD

Jessica Apr 01, 2007

I have severe typosis…. I shall kill the typos!!!! :car:

Melissa Apr 01, 2007

Hahaha! XD

Malin Apr 01, 2007

The Notepad++ seems way better than EditPad that I currently use. Notepad got a prettier interface!
Is there a search and replace function in that one as well?

Melissa Apr 01, 2007

Hey Malin! ^_^ Yep there is! Comes default with the program. :D I have no idea what I would do if it didn’t exist, hehe!

Perry Apr 01, 2007

Nope, no file browser that I’m aware of. In fact, at first glance it looks just like Notepad only with a toolbar. Once you start using it, though, you begin to see the improvements over the original.

Malin Apr 01, 2007

@Melissa: Awesome! Im definetly going to make the switch right now! :D

India Apr 01, 2007

Oh, neato on the bento! Looking at all of them I’ve seen has made me wish I was back at work again so I could get one! But, then again, I’d have to move in with Charlotte so I could whine and beg her to make lunches for me like she does!

I know you’ll be glad to see your dad when he comes back! I’ll keep your family in my daily hit-n-run prayers! *HUGS*

Tracy Apr 01, 2007

What a cute idea what you did to your links :)
I’m downloading notepad right now, can’t wait to see how it works. Ah, ok, I need to close all running programmes - so… see ya :P

Amy Apr 01, 2007

I saw the pictures of Bento boxes in the Qbee BBS. They looked so cute! Oh Pocky I love Pocky! I haven’t been able to find them in any other flavours besides chocolate and strawberry though. :(

Notepad++ and Launchy sound great! I’ll have to check them out! I particularly like the sound of Launchy. It sounds like something that I could definitely benefit from!

Oooh I love the unique descriptions you have for your dailies! I like mine! Hehe. A chocolate lover from Australia. That’s definitely me!

Melissa Apr 01, 2007

@Perry: Hmm, I’ll see about it. ^_^

@Malin: Woot! :D You’ll love it!

@India: Indi-bee! ^_^ You know, I need to add you to my dailies! LOL she does make lovely lunches doesn’t she? XD Aww, thanks for thinking of my fam, that’s so saweet of you! ^_^ And I got my hugs, where are my skweezies?!? XD

@Tracy: Hehe, thanks! :D I thought it might entice people to visit everyone on my dailies. ^_^ And yaay, you’ll love that program it rocks! :D

@Amy: Yeah, I was just too inspired and HAD to get one! XD And YAY for pocky I love love love it! I haven’t looked anywhere else but Walmart yet for Asian food, but people have been suggesting markets to me so I’m going to try to find more! I’ll tell you if I do! ^_^ Heehee, and I’m glad you like your description! I figured it was *you*! ^_^

Tish Apr 01, 2007

Awh, you made me hungry now :P I really want some Pocky. I will have to bribe my parents into ordering some from somewhere. They look so yummy.

Thanks for plugging Notepad++ and Launchy, I have them both now. When I see shiny new software I just have to get it :D I love random programs. That’s probably why my computer is so slow :P

Also, I will be joining you for the CSS Naked day :D I am getting the WP plugin right now. Because I am lazy :P

Melissa Apr 01, 2007

@Tish: Woohooooo! :D You’re the first on my list! ^_^

Ashley Apr 01, 2007

Don’t think my website would qualify as Pefection material, but I love going there sometimes and checking out the sites.

Yay for your dad coming home for awhile! I can only imagine what your family must feel like. I had a long distance relationship for like three years, and I know how tough it is to be away from a loved one. I hope your family gets to have tons of fun with your dad while he’s back!

Jordan Apr 01, 2007

I really love what you did with the links section; I think it’s a great little idea–would you mind if I went ahead and did something similar on mine? I’ve been needing to update my links page since it’s very outdated and doesn’t even link up sites I visit anymore..

I’ve had Launchy bookmarked for awhile… I just can’t be assed into trying out another program that’ll suck up what little memory I usually have left.

This comment is really boring for some reason.. o.O

But! I’m really glad your dad is coming back; It’s great that he was able to get leave for your graduation. :star:

Mar Apr 01, 2007

Those wallpapers were amazing, ha. Thanks for the link.

Jordan Apr 01, 2007

And shame on you! The links your comment authors use have nofollow attached to it!

*pets me ‘SEO For Firefox’ plugin* :drink:

Kaisa Apr 01, 2007

Oooh, Notepad++ looks great! I shall download and test it :) So far ConTEXT has been enough for me, but we’ll see :)

Gemma Apr 01, 2007

Hey hun :)

Thanks for your kind comments about my jewellery, I’m really glad you like it.

I’m loving your little emoticons for your comments, their so adorable! I have to say, the site has completely changed since I last visited [Layout wise, I mean] What’s happened to the layout changing thingmy? I liked that :)

Gem xx

Melissa Apr 01, 2007

@Ashley: Yay thanks! I hope he does too although I bet you a million bucks he’ll come back and just start working on my parents’ hobby business…which is, ironically, honey bees! XD

@Jordan: Yeah go ahead! ^_^ I think its really interesting to read cool facts about people. :D Your comment wasn’t boring, don’t worry, haha! XD And yay thanks, I’m glad he’ll be there too! ^_^

Also, I downloaded that “DoFollow” plugin and activated it! Oh wait I just checked it…it seems I had the options mixed up! XD I figured it out, it should be good now! :D

@Mar: No problem, I love them too!

@Kaisa: Yeah, it rocks! ^_^ Definitely try it out.

@Gemma: Yeah, I love your jewelry, it’s so pretty! ^_^ Oh and I have to sync my style sheets before I can bring back the style switcher…I just keep changing things around, hehe! ^_^

Nadine Apr 01, 2007

whoa, that is quite an update. the bento box
sounds interesting. I’d feel excited if I were
you ^_^ and notepad++ sounds pretty cool.

perhaps I’ll use it when given the chance (:

Mallory Apr 02, 2007

I went to the little market. It was ok; mainly juts staple foods. I got some nori and sushi rice. I really suggest the one on 50, it has a lot more stuff. I may be going out there sometime this week. I do suggest that you go with someone. It’s a bit intimidating going your first time. I got the cutest bowls there with pink kittens and hearts on them. Good luck!

Amber Apr 02, 2007

I found your website through Despair (one of those I have to comment on) and it’s one of the rare good finds that I’ve had. Normally I’m bombarded with teenyboppers blogging about their day at the mall (which is a bit boring, frankly). Anyway, I’m going to RSS subscribe very shortly and link. (Otherwise one of the few good blogs out there will, once again, be forgotten.)

I downloaded a plugin for Firefox that makes the tabs different colours. It’s the most fun thing ever and it makes tabbed browsing such a joy. (That was such a geeky sentence.)

Melissa Apr 02, 2007

@Nadine: Hehe! I Am sooo super excited! ^_^ And yeah definitely try out that program!

@Mallory: I’ll definitely check out the one on 50! Oh wow, I’m so excited now! ^_^

@Amber: Aw yay, thanks so much! And yeah I know what you mean about the teenybopper thing. I actually used to be exactly like that a few years ago but have transitioned since then, thankfully, haha! And I have to check out that FF plugin! My tabs are just grey grey grey right now, hehe. :) GEEKS UNITE!!

Anne Apr 02, 2007

Notepad++ seems to be a nifty program. I think I’ll give it a try. I’ve been using Araneae which, so far, I’ve been really content with.

Yay for your dad coming home! :D

Melissa Apr 02, 2007

Hi Anne! I’ve heard about that Araneae program, it looks interesting…oh yeah definitely try out N++ it really is great! ^_^ And thanks about my dad, I’m excited! :D

Joey Primiani Apr 02, 2007

Wow 40 comments! You go girl!

Melissa Apr 02, 2007

Hehe, I’m just so leet, Joey! ^_^

Ivy Apr 02, 2007

Hello fellow NM, Despair, Perfection! I used to use Notepad++. It’s extremely powerful for something the size of an MP3! But my job requires me to use Dreamweaver and gave me the whole Macromedia set for free too! So, for the sake for my job, I switched.

Using WYSWYG editors has seriously nothing to do with coding skills. It’s a time saver. Why code 1000 lines of code when you can do it in a few clicks and 10 mins of touch ups. Besides, the more sites you create, the more money you get. So all time-savers are welcomed…for me at least! :gb:

Melissa Apr 03, 2007

Hey Ivy! ^_^ Yeah if I end up getting a job that requires Dreamweaver I’m not going to complain. Free tools is always awesome! ^_^ And how cool is it that you found me on Despair too! I love how I’ve gotten people I know for the last few comment rounds! :D

Arien Apr 03, 2007

As a Perfection-ee, just how hard is it to get accepted? Lol, I can totaly feel you rolling your eyes at me and thinking, “Yeah right Arien, with the nights we have at trying to code your cruddy website, you’re really going to get into Perfection, yep… uh huh…”

:D I try…

Melissa Apr 03, 2007

Ima email you right now! :gb:

Ashley Apr 03, 2007

Hey email me too Melissa so that one day I may be perfect! :rainbow:

Scot Smith Apr 15, 2007

Notepad++ is a great supplement to Dreamweaver. Or is it the other way around? I don’t know! I use both.

– Scot
