One Powerful Bird

March 15th, 2008

A conversation I had with Jess about the new HP Blackbird gaming desktop:

HP Blackbird PC

Me: i'm just expecting to see something like "choose your rocket launcher type" as one of the options
Jess: lmao
Me: or "wind power" as a power type
Me: burn some coal and gasoline to keep this beast running
Me: install a big ol fan in your backyard
Jess: lmao
Me: tornado weather = hardcore gaming time
Jess: LMAO
Me: just imagine me sitting with some big headphones on in a huge windy tornado storm with lightning flashing every .5 seconds screaming "HELL YEAH BIOTCH GIMMIE THAT POWER!!!"
Me: as i pwn wif epix
Me: hehe :D
Jess: omg mel hahahaha
Jess: yous crazzzy
Me: ya but that's why i'm cool :D
Jess: uh huh!!!

Ha ha, right? I wasn't even joking about the Blackbird. That thing is insane. PC Gamer gave it a 97% rating (which is apparently the highest rating they've ever given a system) and a coveted Editor's Choice Award. No surprise there, because the specs are literally off the wow-factor charts.

  • Industry standard components for excessive configuration.
  • Full system liquid cooling that keeps the machine super quiet.
  • Thermals for heat isolation and counter-contamination.
  • Easy access with removable side panel, lighting, and wiring.
  • Tool-less upgrades allowing all components to be easily removed/installed.
  • Flexible overclocking that gives the user control over it.

Hella nice. I wish I could afford its hefty price range of $2,500 to $6,500. Actually, a coworker just went through the customization process choosing all the most high end stuff and he was averaging over $10,000! For a desktop! Holy motherboard... :P

Even though that is a very nice system, I think if I were to upgrade I'd probably go for an Alienware or a Dell XPS. I am obsessed with gaming but I'm not hardcore enough to splurge on the Blackbird. I'm still somewhat frugal in that respect. ;D

So what is your setup? Desktop or laptop? Efficient or super powerful? I'm curious. :)

I try to purchase a big enough system to handle the following programs:
All the Sims2 games & expansions, Paint Shop Pro 8, PhotoShop & Adobe (I make my pdfs of my cross stitch charts), MahJong Quest, & lots & lots of graphics (at any one time I have about 3 gigs of images & graphics on my hard drive), plus the speed and graphics card big enough to handle all of it.

When I purchased my laptop ($1400 blooming dollars) it was capable enough to handle everything but the two graphic programs together with the Sims2 games. But my father is working on “tricking out” my old desktop computer and hopefully when he is finished adding the new hard drive, graphics card (video graphics card), ram, memory, and everything else is adding to it I will have a system that will handle the above. Or at least I hope so.

XD That thing is wicked!! I’d love one but ah…after the customization your friend had, it costs more than my new car. :P Sheesh!

That is one sexy computer, I must say… But I’m mostly happy with mine and can in no way, shape, or form even imagine being able to afford to upgrade.

I’ve got a Dell XPS M1210. It’s somewhat upgraded, but still within reason cause I only had a $1600 budget: Intel Centrino Core2 Duo CPU, 1GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 video card, Soundblaster Audigy sound card, bla bla bla. I originally bought it to play World of Warcraft, but now it’s used for art and Final Fantasy XI.

It’s a wonderful computer - I have only two problems with it, though they’re kinda huge problems. 1) The battery doesn’t charge anymore, so now it’s pretty much a desktop. 2) The CPU fan stopped working. I have a cooling plate under it for the time being, but I’m still really worried about it overheating. Other than that, it’s perfect and I won’t ever go back to a desktop computer. :)

Sorry for writing you a book. :x

*shudders* Way too expensive. It’s nice, but building your own with parts is so much cheaper. :D Besides, I’m terrified of liquid cooling.

I have a desktop for gaming so I can upgrade it. It’s mid to high end for gaming, and I can play all modern games on the highest settings, so I’m fine for now, I think.

You love gadgets, don’t you? Lol. :)

Wow! LOL! I’m going to try to draw this for you!! Hahah!! Might take a while and might end up as just a messy sketch, or could be the best masterpiece I’ve ever made!

Seriously, all of us WoW-players who are friends on the web should get together on some server and start a leet guild! :D EPIX! :D

That would totally rawkzors! Yes, I hope to start up again maybe in the summer when I get some money and things settle down. I also have a NE Hunter on… Hmmm.. I think it’s Magtheridon. And some other servers with different friends. I’d totally pay to transfer my BE Mage though! ^_^ Highest I’ve leveled before.. almost 60! lol I can never concentrate, and then once I did, I had to deal with real life!! Gah! lol

But thanks for your comment about my writing. I think I need to practice a bit more at making it clear as to what I mean. I can end up making a sentence that no one can understand but me! lol

I actually just built my new pc last week, and I’m in love. Granted, I didn’t really worry too much about the processor (I stuck with an older model AMD X2) but my main concern was having a motherboard that had at least 4xDDR2 slots, 2xIDE slots, and 2xSATA slots for expansion.

Right now I’ve got 2GB of Corsair RAM, and so far that’s been enough to handle my main programs open at the same time: Illustrator CS2, Photoshop CS3, Thunderbird, Firefox (with 20+ tabs), iTunes and Trillian. And I never notice a single blip in performance and my load is usually 5% between the two processors.

The case itself isn’t the prettiest thing ever but it was just within my budget and something that I wanted to work with for awhile, but eventually I’ll just replace with a decent Antec case from newegg or something.

You can honestly save a lot more by building your own, especially if you already have a hard drive handy. You can easily find awesome deals on memory at Newegg. My Corsair 2GBs were $23 after MIR. Altogether I think I spent roughly $400 on the machine.

I’m actually looking at selling it already because I want to try out the Intel Core 2 Duo, and possibly go SLI with the graphics. I’m not sure though since I don’t do any gaming, but I’ve been really tempted to get a machine that’s capable of handeling Crysis, since I’ve heard nothing but amazing reviews on it.

Currently my setup is laptop, but it’s one diesel laptop. I have a Sony Vaio with a 17″ screen that weighs about 7 pounds. It’s got 160gb of space and 1gb of ram, which is good enough for my gaming needs, and it cost around $2,500 (not a penny out of my pocket though, it was a birthday gift!).

HP makes good computers. My desktop is an HP, but unfortunately I don’t have any peripherals for it right now. It’s got 250gb of space with around a gig of ram also, and it’s about 3 years old and still runs like it’s brand new.

Bran Mar 16, 2008

Bought my laptop last July, and from what you know I’m a huge Sony fan. I have an SZ custom edition now. It’s not 2 gigs ram, 2.3 mhz core duo, 250 gig HD and integrated double switchable graphics card :) I don’t game but the system is so efficient that I have had Adobe suite and like 20 other windows open with no problems. Oh, and Vista rocks. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

Alienware is part of the Dell company but they have nicer cases than XPS, IMHO.

Jess Mar 16, 2008

GIMME DAT POWA!!!

I want my lappy! :*(

Rachael Mar 16, 2008

Alienware FTW.

I have an Alienware laptop and I *LOVE* it. So much. More than I love… my car. :o

Melissa Mar 17, 2008

Thanks for the responses, everyone! I love hearing about techie stuff like this! :D

Cristina Mar 17, 2008

tornado weather = hardcore gaming time

You better move to Oklahoma now! :P

I sadly know nothing about gaming computery stuff since I am *gasp* not a gamer. All I know is lack of the right stuff for gaming makes the boyfriend angry, LOL!

Mar Mar 17, 2008

Yeah I am not gunna lie, I would completely rather get someone to build me one, way cheaper….

Taversia Mar 17, 2008

pwning wif epix is always a good thing. :P
