Debate 2004 Kickoff

October 1st, 2004
Last night was the first of several debates between Kerry and the President. :) They talked alot about the issue of Iraq and the war, with Kerry questioning many of Bush's decisions while the President himself upheld them. In rebuttal Bush emphasized many times that he doesn't believe that the war is a "great diversion" and how it is imperative that we stay in Iraq until democracy is effectively established. Kerry wants to pull the troops out within 6 months of his appointment to office. Overall it was a great debate that covered many issues and either strengthened or weakened people's ideas of the candidates' characters. :) I have to say...though I am an avid Bush supporter I give Kerry props for being a very strong speaker in the first debate. Many people make fun of the President for sometimes stuttering and pausing for a long time during his speeches, I admit it's not a good trait to have but I feel that, hopefully, Bush will be more articulate during his next debate with Kerry. Have a good Friday everyone! TGIF! :D

I agree with you. I am also a Bush supporter, and I believe that Kerry’s eloquence and charm should not hinder people from analyzing his statements and further evaluating his convictions. He may speak well, but it is his intentions and his values that matter most. Bush does stumble over words, but in essence he speaks as a common man with common speech, easy enough to understand. He does not bother with pretentious words, nor with a declamatory act. ^_^ But you’re right. Poise and charisma sway the people’s emotions and decisions (unfortunately) and hopefully Bush will be a better speaker than he was last night.

I’m more of a Kerry supporter, but only by default. However, I didn’t think there really was a clear “winner” in this debate. They both did very well. The only thing that annoyed me was how Bush kept repeating certain phrases (ie. Wrong war, wrong place, wrong time). I was like, “Heard you the first time, dude!”)

Bush was wholly defeated and not entirely by Kerry. He did it himself. He was entirely unprepared and acted like a child. Much like his Presidency. What you saw was a President who has been questioned for the first time in four years. He has not givin an interview to anyone considered a seroius journalist, non partisan or on the left, he has given fewer press conferences than any president this century. He has not allowed any followup questions during any of these press conferences. He has vacationed for a full third of his Presidency, also a record. He has been living in a bubble of spin. Well that Bubble has burst and he can hide no longer. While the right clamors for Kerry to be specific about what he would do, Bush presents NO agenda other than a simplistic “Stay the Coarse”. Bush supporters have a standard for Bush and a much higher one for Kerry. I don’t want a “common man” leading the free world. If my president is having a beer with me at my local bar then we are all in serious trouble. How is he supposed to converse with world leaders if he can’t finish a sentence and a rehearsed one at that. I amused that you all have so little confidence and low expectations for our President. Switch the candidates for one second and imagine Kerry performing as Bush did, that would it for Kerry. Thankfully reality is what it is, and “hoping” Bush will do better is a long shot at best. But then again he did so bad there’s only one way to go. I predict he’ll stay the coarse. Off to sell an arm to fill my gas tank, can’t wait for the domestic agenda Bush also doesn’t have. Bush was a cheerleader, that’s right, the swaggering fake cowboy (he’s from Connecticut!) was a cheerleader, this explains the rah rah we can do it agenda.
Kerry in a landslide.

Response to Scott K
I respect your beliefs although I disagree to a point. I am particuarly for Bush because I just don’t like Kerry and don’t agree with many of his policies. Many people I know don’t want either of them as president, lol. I wish there was a better candidate as well…but since there isn’t, and I just don’t connect with Kerry’s agenda I’m going to stick with Bush.

I appreciate your comment but slander and sarcasm (even if it is directed towards Kerry and this goes for everybody) won’t sway my opinion. Just like probably anything I say won’t move your position either.

Thanks again for your views. :)

Articulation and long pauses in a speech have nothing to do with leadership ability or issues involving the nation. I saw the debates, I know how Bush speaks.

I don’t think you read my response to your earlier comment and I feel kind of insulted that you are ignoring my views, but whatever. I don’t really feel like fighting a verbal war with you over who is a better candidate, lol.

Bottom line, I dislike Kerry more than Bush…that won’t change and I am not changing my vote. Sorry.

M,
Thicken your skin, it’s a political discussion.
Coming to a 90 minute debate with three minutes worth of amo is simply being, unprepared and overconfident.
I certainly did not mean to ignore your response, but I can’t find a position on any topic hidden in:
“I just don?t like Kerry and don?t agree with many of his policies.”
What policies and why? Let me start.
Iraq. Why did we attack? They did nothing and we now know they had nothing.
Afghanistan. Why did we leave?
Osama. The one who did it. Is still out there. Why don’t we have 140,000 troops after him? Why haven’t we spent over 120 billion on finding him?
Healthcare. My family policy has doubled in four years. While my coverage has been reduced and prescription drug coverage practically eliminated.
Tax relief is a joke. I have two kids and my wife and I both have our own small business’, I have first hand knowledge of this. Wake up, this admin is for the rich by the rich. YOU are not on their priority list.

“Bottom line, I dislike Kerry more than Bush?that won?t change and I am not changing my vote. Sorry.”

What is it that you don’t like?
Again nothing specific here.
I have to point back at you and say, YOU have not responded to anything I have said with anything specific.

Finally, I’m not after your vote, whether you change is up to you. I’ll debate anyone on boards in the hopes that others will read and learn something. The person on the other side is usually just as fervent as I and never cedes.
I just hope you immerse yourself in some issues and look at the dismal four year record of Bush. Of coarse, my site is a good place to start.
Cheers!

Touche, Scott. :) I will write an entry depicting my more specific beliefs. Hope that satisfies you at least a little, lol. :)

Oh, and although I respect your website I don’t think I’d visit it to check out issues more in depth….mostly because of your bias towards Kerry, no offense. I’d rather try to find a non-biased site that will give me more pros and cons about both candidates….especially about the stuff I don’t already know.

I’m not really the debating type, as you can probably tell, but I appreciate you taking the time to discuss these things with me. It’s very enlightening in a way.

Have a good Wednesday. :)
