Horrible Storm

A Thunderstorm

Bah, one of the worst storms this season is going on right now outside. :( The lightning is cracking louder than I've ever heard it. A few minutes ago I think one struck so near my house that my power kind of freaked out. My internet went out for a little bit (I almost cried, lol) and some weird alarm started going off from near my smoke alarm. It was a different alarm though, but thankfully it just got fixed. It was beeping SO loud.

I found some good tips on how to "survive" a thunderstorm. I did alot of these when I went through the hurricanes back in 2004, particularly Frances which swept almost directly through my town. Anyhoo, here are the tips (quoted version, via NBC4):

* Turn off or unplug all major electric appliances.
* Leave one light on so you'll know when the power has been restored.
* Stay off the phone.
* Stay away from the windows.
* Avoid taking a shower or bath.
* If you're driving, reduce your speed and stop by the side of the road with your emergency lights on.
* If you're outside, stay away from trees, tall objects, metal objects and standing water.
* If you begin to feel your hair stand on end, lightning is about to strike. You should drop to your knees and bend forward with your hands on your knees while you crouch down. Do not lie flat on the ground.

And these are interesting facts about thunderstorm safety:

Corded telephone use is the leading cause of indoor lightning injuries in the United States. Lightning can travel long distances on phone and electrical wires, particularly in rural areas. If you must use a phone during a storm, a cellular phone is safest.

Stay away from windows and doors, as these can provide the path for a direct strike. Basements are generally safe places to go during thunderstorms, but avoid contact with concrete walls that may contain metal reinforcing bars.

Also, avoid washers and dryers because they have contacts with plumbing and electrical systems and contain an electrical path to the outside through the dryer vent. - OSCWA

Omg, check it out, I discovered StormWiki while browsing about thunder storms!

StormWiki is a newly-born Wiki made especially for those concerned with Severe Storms, particularly the storm chasing community.

Wowzers, that's a cool site. I love any kind of wiki sites, hehe. :) Ok, stay safe if you're stuck in the rain like me!
