Plz Blog Me?!

May 12th, 2008

Most people usually learn about the ways of the Internet world the hard way. They usually create a website that mimics a design/content trend that is currently popular and then end up being slammed for stupidity by those who are knowledgeable or just getting a pretty pair of panties instead. Or both! :D

I have a small tip for those starting out, or even those who have been around a while and just need to be corrected. :P This is one of my Internet pet peeves and I've seen it happen so often lately that I just had to rant about it. I can probably think of more tips, but I should save those for later. ;) So, without further ado...

The word blog does NOT mean an individual news entry you've written. It is incorrect to say "I wrote a blog today" and I positively hate seeing it phrased like that. You should say you wrote a blog entry or post. Don't be lazy and leave off the ending.

I once heard a TV news station petitioning people to "write a blog" on their website in reply to the topics they cover on their show. Obviously they had wanted people to leave comments or responses. 8| I think it's funny when I see companies and other website owners claiming to be "in the know" when they misuse common phrases and words so bluntly. It's not that hard to look up a definition! Aren't journalists and bloggers supposed to be resourceful? :P You'd think so.

To enlighten the unaware, here is the true definition of blog:

A blog (an abridgment of the term web log) is a website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. ~ Wikipedia

It is a website! So those who are saying "I'm writing a blog today" are really being modest because apparently they can write up a whole website in one day! :D I wanna learn from these amazing people because they must know something I do not.

Can anyone think of any other commonly misused Internet terms?

Do you want me to comment here or do you want me to blog about this? XD

Melissa May 12, 2008

*gives Rachaely a cookie for correct usage*

Mallory May 12, 2008

Personally I don’t even like the term “blog”. I prefer online journaling, however pretentious that sounds. XD But it makes it hard to talk to people about my website because I just can’t bring myself to say that I blog.

Anyway, I can’t really think of misused Internet terms. But I was watching TV the other day and I could SWEAR the speaker said “Do you like the Internets?” Yes, internetS. I even asked my boyfriend and he said that’s what it sounded like. I want to reply “Why yes I like the Internets, I personally own 5 thank you!” :P

Regina May 12, 2008

Hmm misused terms? Okay I got one totally lame one that I see one several of my friend’s tagboards. Example:

Daisy: Hello Mary please relink me.
Mary: Relinked

Like what on earth is relink? There is no such thing! Argh, it irritates me a lot. X_X

Hev May 12, 2008

I sometimes do this very thing even though I know that it is wrong. I promise I will try to do better, lol.

Chelsea May 12, 2008

Wow… I never knew that! I’ve never said “I wrote a blog” or whatever but others have said it to me. Well, thanks for the useful blog ENTRY (see what I did there?), it was educational. ;)

Sarah May 12, 2008

Wow I am so totally writing a blog today!

Only teasing. ;)

Sean May 12, 2008

Me being the lazy person that I am, I generally just say I’ve written a new entry. XD

Jessica May 12, 2008

It is so nice to know someone else feels the same. I do wonder if Tom from myspace has changed that yet. XD

Vera May 12, 2008

It’s really sad, that unless a certain action is a relatively important part of one’s life, people are unable to present anything even remotely correct about it.

I remember one day mom called me to watch a talk show about blogs, on a popular Romanian news channel. I got so frustrated within 5 minutes. They kept analysing and over analysing things, and just plain dealing with it as if it were some very “weird and (possibly) dangerous phenomenon”.

I never actually heard anyone say that he wrote a blog. Maintain one yes, but not write one…

Rilla May 12, 2008

I usually just say “I’ve posted in my blog” or something along those lines. I’ve also had a similar rant about it before… About how some people like using terms they’re not so familiar with, especially among others who’re not expected to understand such terms (to show that they’re more capable perhaps). Really glad to know that I’m not the only one getting annoyed over something like this. :P

Lauren May 12, 2008

OMG, I sooooo agree. I really think Myspace is the culprit for starting all of this. Myspace refers to blog entries as blogs. The link to write a new entry is titled “post a new blog.” It bugged me sooo much to see all these people first hear of blogs with this incorrect terminology.

All of the Fox affiliates are bad about this too. Maybe this is what you saw on TV. They have myFoxOrlando (or whatever city) websites, where they encourage you to write in during newscasts with your opinion. They say post a blog, etc. I think our station actually says “blog us!!” ehhh? XO

Cristina May 12, 2008

I bet Jem will agree with me on this one when people talk about “CSS Stylesheets.” XD

Clem May 12, 2008

I think I may have misused the word blog a few times, but I won’t anymore. :) I think it’s becoming a nerb (noun that becomes a verb) like “Google”. I love it when news stations/newspapers try to sound all cool and “with it” and they end up sounding stupid to anyone else.

Ashley May 12, 2008

lol!! I haven’t wrote a blog on my site in awhile. I should get around to writing a blog about that meme I got tagged with. Yeah, I should totally write a blog about that! :goodie:

Louise May 12, 2008

I’ve heard people say, “I have the internet now” meaning they have a new internet connection/access. >_>

Jess May 12, 2008

I think I’m going to write a BLOG about how awesome you are. Since you are teaching me the ways of the net… a BLOG written specially for you will show you how appreciative I am. Ok now my brain hurts.

*stealz pillow and runs away*

Can I have a cookie?

Bran May 12, 2008

I’ve heard this more than once-

Friend: I need to get a spyware program on my computer”
Me: ???
Me: Oh, you mean ANTI-Spyware

Same for Anti-Virus. And one time someone asked me about McAfee’s Norton.

Regina May 12, 2008

LOL at Bran’s comment.
*feels proud to have always used “blog” correctly*
I always just say “I’m going to post an entry on my blog today” :)

Britney May 13, 2008

“I wrote a blog today.” Translation: “I wrote a website today.” LULZ!

Melissa May 13, 2008

Haha, you all make me laugh. XD

Vira May 13, 2008

I wish I could start working on my blog today, but current events… really great current events… are stealing all my cash flow! So I can’t afford to get hosting just yet.

But I will defiantly have much to post about in my blog!

Caitlin May 13, 2008

Haha this post is awesome and full of win. :D

Noellium May 13, 2008

Ahh, I love this entry. :goodie:

I generally get annoyed when people (non-webmasters) ask me “Do you use Dreamweaver or do you use HTML?” (when building a website) And I start to think ‘Ummm, Dreamweaver uses HTML too. It only codes it for you.’ X(

Ashley May 13, 2008

Dreamweaver or HTML! LMAO! Hilarious!!

Annie May 14, 2008

Woops *slaps wrist* I’m pretty sure I’ve misused the term “blogging/blogged/blog” even though I know the definition. Shame. On. Me. :P

Misused terms? Hm…CSS Stylesheet seems to be a favourite of tutorial-ists. :D There are probably more but I can’t remember them, hah.

Marieke May 14, 2008

This probably sounds stupid but I guess I kind of have to stand up for the people who make these mistakes… I mean, it could have been a mistake I could make (not anymore, thanks for sharing what is the right way to use it). Lots of people don’t use English as their first language… and they improve their English vocabulary, grammar etc. by reading other people’s websites, and adopting their way of writing, at least I seem to do this. I understand it can be extremely annoying if someone uses the wrong words, but I guess it should be important to keep in mind that some of us don’t know all the rules of proper English…

That said, thanks for teaching me all these things… it’s awesome! ^^

Melissa May 14, 2008

…some of us don’t know all the rules of proper English…

Good point, Marieke! I give the benefit of the doubt to those who don’t speak English fluently, so I think my annoyance is more geared toward people who should actually know better. :P

Holly May 14, 2008

Lol, I’d never thought about this before! Clearly I fail at speaking English! :O

Vanesa May 14, 2008

Wow, FINALLY someone who points this out. “Blog” being used incorrectly just gets on my nerves, and I see it everywhere!

Michelle May 15, 2008

I second Clem - the only times I can think of people misusing terms are when they turn nouns into verbs: “Google me.” “I facebooked you yesterday.” “Myspace me a message.”

I tend to stay away from the word “blog” because “web log” reminds me too much of Captain’s logs and things like that. I feel like I should be noting the weather and my coordinates in every entry. So I generally refer to my website as a journal, but then of course you get the people who say “I’m writing a journal today.”

Anonymous May 16, 2008

Hey,

http://shiny.nu

Look similar? :|

Alexandra May 19, 2008

I disagree with Michelle: “Google” is becoming a verb! I don’t care what anybody says!

Jenny May 19, 2008

I totally agree with you but I’ve never personally seen this done.

Vanesa May 20, 2008

Oh! I know another one! Some people use “content” as a link in their navigation when technically, everything on the website is content.

Melissa May 21, 2008

Heehee, good one Vanesa. :D

And google is totally a verb now…I use it all the time. XD I don’t lump it in with “blog” though, that’s crossing the line!! Hehe.

Look similar? :|

I’ve discussed this with Arwen already. Yes it is similar but I don’t really care. She’s not copying anything of mine directly. Most of my structure was, of course, inspired by several other websites with similar elements. Links in the footer, sidebar boxes…everyone has them.

The only way I would have been upset is if she would have blatantly stolen my graphics or copied my content. Since she did neither, and I can’t copyright a trend, her design is fine. :)
