Most people usually learn about the ways of the Internet world the hard way. They usually create a website that mimics a design/content trend that is currently popular and then end up being slammed for stupidity by those who are knowledgeable or just getting a pretty pair of panties instead. Or both!
I have a small tip for those starting out, or even those who have been around a while and just need to be corrected.
This is one of my Internet pet peeves and I've seen it happen so often lately that I just had to rant about it. I can probably think of more tips, but I should save those for later.
So, without further ado...
The word blog does NOT mean an individual news entry you've written. It is incorrect to say "I wrote a blog today" and I positively hate seeing it phrased like that. You should say you wrote a blog entry or post. Don't be lazy and leave off the ending.
I once heard a TV news station petitioning people to "write a blog" on their website in reply to the topics they cover on their show. Obviously they had wanted people to leave comments or responses.
I think it's funny when I see companies and other website owners claiming to be "in the know" when they misuse common phrases and words so bluntly. It's not that hard to look up a definition! Aren't journalists and bloggers supposed to be resourceful?
You'd think so.
To enlighten the unaware, here is the true definition of blog:
A blog (an abridgment of the term web log) is a website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. ~ Wikipedia
It is a website! So those who are saying "I'm writing a blog today" are really being modest because apparently they can write up a whole website in one day!
I wanna learn from these amazing people because they must know something I do not.
Can anyone think of any other commonly misused Internet terms?
