Wordpress 2.6 Beta!

June 24th, 2008

Oh yes, just when you thought you were getting used to the insane changes of version 2.5, the developers are already pushing forward to 2.6! Don't start panicking, thinking you will have to moan and groan through a painful upgrade. It won't be as heavy of an update (or a shocker for people) like 2.5 was. ;)

However, there are a few cool new features:

  1. Post Revisions - Easily see a history of changes made to posts/pages.
  2. Theme Previews - Yes! The ability to preview a theme before you change it!
  3. Disable Remote Publishing - Adding more security by default.
  4. Default Gravatars - To display for those who do not have a gravatar. You can do this now but the added feature will be easier on those less experienced with WP. :)
  5. Bulk Plugin Management - Ability to bulk delete, activate and deactivate plugins!
  6. Static File Caching - Utilizes Google Gears to caches images and JavaScript so that your browser doesn’t have to download it every time you’re in the admin page.

You can download the beta and try it out. I'm going to be testing out my themes on it as well. :) They are aiming for a release in mid-July, so be ready! :D

I will try this but I am sure it will break everything so I might as well wait…I like betas tho!

Another upgrade to look forward to. XD

Vasili Jun 24, 2008

Oh, the post revisions looks like a cool new feature. I might just have to test this out. :goodie:

Clem Jun 24, 2008

Oh no, not again. The only thing I’ll really use is the bulk plugin management; the other things… meh. It just means more upgrading. :(

Amy Jun 24, 2008

I’m looking forward to that! The theme previewer will hopefully be very useful. :D

Hmmm… Ah well, another upgrade to do, I guess…

I’ve still been having issues with the picture upload in 2.5, but I haven’t had to upload anything recently so I haven’t cared as much. That, and it doesn’t hurt me too much to move to the backend and do it the “old fashioned way,” I guess…

I installed the beta on my Mac, and I’m really liking the revisions feature. I’ve been waiting for a bulk plugin activation feature ever since I started using Wordpress!

I’ve still been having issues with the picture upload in 2.5…

I read in that article (the first link in my post) that they are updating the uploading features as well. I found some annoyances with it as well so hopefully they’ve fixed issues in 2.6!

Jessica Jun 24, 2008

Why can they just leave well enough alone. Is there any major bug fixes in this release? If not I’ll prolly stick with 2.5 cuz I am so tired of updating. Ugh. X_X

Cristina Jun 24, 2008

You know, glory be the day when WP integrates an automatic upgrade option, just like their automatic plug-in upgrade option. :P

Regina Jun 24, 2008

The updates sound neat, I can’t wait for them to release it!

Hi,

Thanks for the link, but just a note on the Google Gears implementation: this won’t currently allow you to edit your posts while offline and then sync up later. It just caches images and javascript (etc.) so that your browser doesn’t have to download it every time you’re in the admin page.

Anyway, great blog… You have a cool community of friends and readers it seems.

Ooh, thanks for the clarification! I must have read it wrong. :) I could have sworn I read it did some kind of synchronization after being offline. Thanks again! :D
