Be Proud

March 30th, 2004
After reading this confession on Group Hug I have to agree with the author. Some people just don't understand how privileged they are living in the USA, at least the majority of them. "You spoiled American complainers don't even know what it's like to suffer." That's totally true...I bet more than half of today's teenagers, college students and people in their 20s haven't even been outside of the country. I've had the awesome privilege of visiting 16 different countries and its hard for me sometimes to believe that poverty, suffering, and even other cultures really exist outside of books and newspapers. Not that I'm better than anyone for seeing all these places or that I have some kind of better grasp on reality because of it....but it just goes to show anyone what a sheltered world we live in now-a-days...no matter where we live or what our lifestyle is. I mean, I even lived in a bunch of those countries, in the neighborhoods that were considered upper class and I still always had a longing to go back to the USA because it was so much better (according to what I like). In Mexico City you stop at a stoplight and little kids run over and start washing your windshield...or dancing inbetween the cars dressed in clown costumes...even flame throwers are out there! smily Just trying to make some money...poor people in Mexico don't paint or finish their houses (more like shacks) so they don't have to pay taxes on them...so you see miles and miles of grey concrete squares bunched together and lining the hillsides with only fleeting slivers of color here and there. That's just the way it is...so be proud of where you live...even if you do live in a foreign country, at least you have the ability to get on a computer and surf the web...which is a definite luxury that most people on this planet take for granted. :x

While I may not realize exactly how lucky I am, I am frequently grateful to have access to electricity, indoor plumbing, running water, etc. I’m also grateful to be able to worship the deity of my choice, and vote for who I want… even though I’m a woman. While America may have it’s faults, it’s a great country to live in. :)

I do agree with you though. Most people just don’t get how blessed they are. I hope I don’t forget… :)
