Where is the Patriotism??

October 7th, 2003

There is just something so sad about the ripped remains of a flag in a college lecture hall. Class hasn't started yet and I just saw this girl taking pictures of something up on stage...it looked like it was of the wall but then I realized that there was a pole attached to a doorframe on the front stage and that it had red, white and blue shreds of material and a little bronze-colored figure at the end. I remember there being an issue, of which I'm sure is still being debated in present tense, where people were trying to get the flag out of all the rooms on campus.

Seriously, how unpatriotic can you be? How can you have enough guts to rip your country's colors down from any area? If you hate America so much then freakin' move somewhere else, people! If nothing at least be happy you have the right to tear down your flag and show disgust with where you live and who your leaders are. In other countries, like Afghanistan, you get killed for displaying such disloyalty. Its just so sad when someone doesn't have at least some pride in where they live.

Maybe its just because I was born into a military family and I've lived in other countries where poverty overwhelms the majority of the population. Where little 8yr old kids have to wash the windows of cars on busy and dangerous city roads just to earn money to support their families. Kids who, if they lived in the USA, would be worrying more about learning how to read and write in school and what Santa Claus is gonna bring them for Christmas that year than if they are going to get to eat that day depending on how much they make running around in front of rushing cars for a few pesos. Maybe you should try living in an unfinished concrete-walled shack with dirt floors and barely even enough of anything to clothe you or cover you when you're cold, where college is pretty much not even an option for any kid who actually graduates from high school and doesn't have money. What's a scholarship? A grant? A freakin' favor

Stupid people who sit there in the college dorms or apartments that Mommy and Daddy paid for, or that was given to them as a scholarship reward, or who even work themselves to death each semester just to pay for it and at least have an education. They whine about the idiocy of our country and rip down its colors but don't even know how life really is for like 80% of the rest of the world who don't have (and never will have) the opportunities we that we do here in the United States of America. It disgusts me, the ungrateful unpatriotic views of people who are selfish and so outspoken on what their rights are when they should just be grateful that at least they have rights.

Drink your stupid Starbucks coffee, surf the web on your expensive computer, talk to your best friend on your cell phone, go out and party with people, go to a concert, or see a good movie and then come back and tell me that you really do hate America.

USA! USA! USA!
Its not often I’m inspired by someone else’s tirade, and I don’t often feel patriotic, but what you wrote was really good. I hope they catch those guys.

I am a very patriotic person too, and I was stomping and shouting for weeks when some people went through the streets of London burning our flag. I think such people should be deported. And hanged if they do it again. Maybe that’s a bit extreme, but still. I agree with you :P

@Tish: Agreed, quite so! If people don’t like the country they live in they should just move out!
