Reporting live from Girl Scout camp!
This week is what I've been waiting for all summer! I am the Unit Leader for the Multimedia session, where the girls are helping to make a promotional video for the camp. We're also doing fun stuff with cameras and videoing the activities of other campers throughout the week. I can't wait to edit it all together to make a kick ass video!
The most exciting incident of the week so far was a snake sighting! I had divided the girls up into groups to come up with skits that they'll be filming tomorrow. One group was using the latrine area as a "Temple of Doom" for some Indiana Jones type of thing.
For those who are unaware, latrines are essentially "outhouses", but they have toilet seats and paper and we bleach them every day, hehe.
Anyhoo, so I followed the girls over there and was watching them practice when all of a sudden one of them goes "OMG, A SNAKE!!" and then they all run screaming down the path! I yell to them "Girls, calm down it's nothing!" and surprisingly they did stop and actually tried to come back for another look at it.
I sent them away and radioed the code phrase for a snake sighting: "This is Sunny, I need a tool at my unit!" The "tool" is actually a metal hoe that is used to kill the snake and chop its head off.
So the main and assistant camp directors came down with hoes. I pointed it out to them and they were like "Oh wow, it's a rattle snake! And it was a pretty long one too, about four feet, after we got a closer look! They decided to radio the camp ranger about it and he ended up swinging the hoe in a hard chop and killed it quickly.
There have only been a few sightings of snakes here so it's not a bad camp at all, hehe! I love it here! There's a big bouncy inflatable pillow (about the size of a large pool) to jump on, a rock climbing wall and zip line, canoeing, hiking, scenic views and a pool with slides! I wish I could work at a camp all year long.
My group is taking tons of pictures this week so I'll try to post some of the good ones later on Flickr! Have a lovely Monday, woot!

Yay you’re alive! *tackleglomp*
Rattlesnakes are quite common where I live (my high school’s mascot is the diamondbacks, haha). A few times when we’ve had one at our house my dad would use a hoe, but we’ve had some huge ones so he uses his gun on those. I’m glad none of the girls got hurt or bit by the snake. Those suckers are not fun to mess with.
Hey at least the “Temple of Doom” has lived up to its name with the snake sighting, mwah hah. Have fun girlie and I hope to hear more from you!
that sounds liek a lot of fun, I wish I could work at a camp!
I check your blog all the time to see if you’ve posted anything. *is obsessed?* Sounds like you’re having a much better time than before which I am glad to hear.
Can’t wait to hear more and see photos!
I though the little brownies ate you all up for not having enough brownie points. I too check your site. I stalk you.
Can’t wait to see more pictures!
BTW I changed urls & emails.
First off, is it sad that when asked my name, I automatically think ‘CAMP NAME’?
Secondly, I’d just like to say that the snake we saw down in our unit never came around again (thank god) but if it had, I might have peed myself. Way to handle the situation, Miss Brave Sunny. Your girls were lucky to have you around (to radio someone else to get the job done :P)
:star:
Ahh I hate snakes. That would scare the hell out of me. I am glad that you’re having a good time at camp though. I can’t wait to hear more when you get back!
