The Skin Project

April 1st, 2004

So Becky, a friend of mine, told me about a project by Shelley Jackson entitled Skin where each participant gets a tattoo of a word in her story so it becomes like some kind of "living story" or something. :P I thought it was super cool, so I went ahead and applied. Before you ask me a bunch of questions about it please read the description on the site, its actually a kind of hard thing to explain.

I haven't recieved a response from her yet, she says that it takes a few weeks because she gets thousands of emails a day about this thing...but I'm not sure if I'll get accepted because soooo many people have already applied and there's only about 2000 words in her story. :(

If I do by some chance get accepted and she sends me a word (and depending on the word) I'm definitely going to get a tattoo of it. Before I do I'll probably tell my Dad...debating on how to tell my Mum...she flipped when Dad got one but I don't want to keep her in the dark...it'll probably make her feel bad if I don't tell her and I don't really wanna hurt our lovely mother-daughter relationship here. ;)

Other than this idea I wouldn't really know what to get for a tattoo. I told Shelley when I email/applied that I believe a tattoo should be an expression of yourself and not be conforming...it should be totally unique and also be something you believe in. An expression of your faith in something, your name, your symbol, whatever...something that not alot of people, if any, have as tattoos. For a unique design I have no clue what I'd want...if I don't get accepted I probably won't get one for a while, or at all...depends on if I find something that I'd actually like to have permanently on my body. It just all depends.

Anyone have any ideas, opinions, etc on tattoos? Post a comment! :)

Please consider Leviticus 19:28, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.”
