Weekend Freedom!

June 8th, 2007

Ahh! I'm back from my staff training week at Girl Scout camp! It was amazing, I must say. All of my fellow counselors and staff are great people and I can't wait to keep on working with them this summer. I became pretty close with my tentmates for the week, who are three great people that just make me laugh all day long! :D

One thing that you might find funny about camp is that the staff never uses real names, we make up fun or silly camp names to call ourselves. It is mainly to separate our personal info from the campers, since they are here to experience fun activities at camp and not learn about our lives, hehe, if that makes sense. But overall, the kids love the silly camp names and go crazy trying to figure out our real ones. :P

Sunny!

My camp name is Sunny, of course. :) My tentmates names were: Otter, Fuchsia, and Wonderbread. Yes, yes, but don't ask me why they picked them, haha! Other names in the staff are: Catbird, Skippy, Piglet, Bunny, Bambi, Midnight, and lots more. Chaz couldn't stop laughing when I was telling him about everyone, but seriously, it's like a second nature to us now to call each other by these silly names. :P

Yesterday a bunch of us went caving! Meaning we put on grungy jeans and helmets with lights and climbed around in these awesome caves that had cool rock formations. We climbed up a vertical shaft to get to a dome-shaped room that had a little waterfall in the center! We also crawled on our stomaches and wiggled through a 120ft long "crawl" section of the cave, which was only about 2-3ft high the entire time! I don't have pictures yet, but I'll try to find some to post!

Our first session of campers come on Sunday evening, so I have to be back at camp by then to help set up. Aside from being the Music Director, I'll also be a Unit Leader. Right now my session is called "Boots & Bridles", which is mostly made up of Cadettes. Their activities center around riding and learning more about horses at the intermediate level. And um, I'll be honest...I don't know diddly about horses. :P Luckily, my Assistant Unit Leader and two Junior Counselors do so I won't be lost, ha!

Oh yeah, by the way, my AUL's name is Bubbles and my two JCs are Cheetah and Comet. Woot! :D I hope this is a good session! This week is also "Hawaiian Luau" themed, so I need to go find a grass skirt or something.

Ok, enough about camp! I'm glad to be back here with Chaz, I missed him lots. :) I also hope to try to cram in some time with my friends, including the lovely Arien! My Q*Bee duties need attending to as well. Lot's to do, lot's to do!

Chaz is making me dinner tonight, what a sweetie! :D I hope I can get everything done tomorrow!

Caving sounds like a lot of fun! =) Did you get claustrophobic at all in the crawl space? Yikes. I think I would, hehe.

Did you ever get your DS Lite?

Man it sounds like you are having a lot of fun so far. Glad to hear it! I love the crazy nicknames you guys have. Haha Bambi. Disney names. Oh Lordy!

Amber Jun 09, 2007

Caving sounds scary let alone fun. I have never been an adventurous person so I admire you greatly.

Caving sounds like soo much fun, I really hope I get to try it someday. This whole Girl Scout thing sounds like fun, I never got involved in it and I kind of wish I had now.

I would love to go in a cave & just stare at the vastness. My mom says I have been to the Carlsbad Caverns but I forget. It sounds like you are having much fun & I hope you have the best summer ever!

Thanks all! :D

@Kim: I think the only thing that kept me from going crazy was the fact that we were all cracking jokes the entire way through! We would literally roll on our sides, then scoot on our bellies, then do one of those Army crawls…laughing all the way! XD And nope, no DS Lite for me yet but I’m TOTALLY getting one as soon as I can!! :D

You went spelunking??? GAWD, woman, but I admire your bravery! Just thinking about the creepy crawly cave critters…

Caitlin Jun 13, 2007

Camp sounds fun! I have never heard of caving… but it sounds really interesting!

Melissa Jun 13, 2007

Caving is always fun and very pretty in a rustic kind of way but I must ask.. have you seen ‘the descent’?

Amy Jun 15, 2007

Camp sure sounds like a lot of fun! I love the idea of nicknames. I think it does make sense in a way. The campers are there for the fun and games mostly, but it would be cool to learn a bit more about each other too. I guess a nickname is a cool thing to have though. Hope to see you back soon! :gb:

Sounds like you’re having a lot of fun! :) I bet caving was neat. I love caves. Hey, have you been to Mammoth Cave? You should go if you haven’t already been. It’s pretty cool. Some of the tours are way better than others.

Hey lovlies! I hope your camping is going well. I’m about to lose my mind with this school business. Tell me, what do you think I should do for the rest of my life. I find instructing yoga to be very tempting. :gb:
