My website just survived a 54 hour downtime, as some of you who frequent my site may have noticed. However, it is back and everything has been salvaged!
Hurrah! I am so relieved and happy because my site is incredibly important to me and having it "disappear" is almost like a beloved pet running away. Or something like that.
My host is Site5 and while you might think that they I should hate their service for what happened I must tell you that it really is quite the opposite. Most people probably would have run away screaming in anger after such a large outage like this, but I have good reasons for sticking around.
What happened was they rebooted Delbin, my server, after an outage and found a problem with its RAID card. They ended up having to replace the card itself and then import the backups of all the hosted websites onto the new card.
However, what should have taken just a few hours ended up spanning into almost three full days as the restore process was slowed down by more hardware problems:
We're experiencing some issues with the back end switch that our backup machine is connected to, so this restore is running at 100mbit instead of 1000mbit.
After that notice, all the techs were able to update with was that they were continuing work on Delbin but there was no ETA on when it would become available. This unfortunately caused a ton of uproar amongst others hosted along with me and I'm certain that several people left (according to the community forums).
The main reason I didn't pack up and leave was because the problem was with the hardware, not with some rogue user who was eating up resources (the most common problem on shared servers). Hardware can be replaced with better hardware, so woot I get an "upgrade" of sorts.
Secondly, I just have so many friends who are also hosted with Site5 and have had great experiences. Customer service really has been exceptional overall and I am just so in love with their account management system!
After I discovered my site had returned (without a scratch!) I rushed over to the forums to read up on any updates on the situation and found this note from the Director of Operations:
Firstly, let me apologize for the current Delbin outage. Please know that Vince Stratful (our Director of Technical Operations) has personally been working day and night (having slept only eight hours since Friday) on this outage. An outage of this magnitude (or any outage for that matter) serves us absolutely no good. Understand that we do everything we can to resolve them as quickly as possible.
That being said, at some point tomorrow all Delbin account owners will be receiving an email informing them of a six month hosting credit being applied to their accounts...
Excellent!
New hardware and six months free hosting! I am so glad I didn't jump ship. That and I also saw it mentioned on the forums that since Delbin has had so many problems lately it will probably be more closely watched now, which gives me additional peace of mind.
All in all, Site5 is awesome.
Even though my site was down for so long, it really wasn't directly the company's fault as hardware can malfunction unexpectedly. They fixed it, made it better and then compensated those of us who stayed on. Great response time, in my opinion. Not too many hosting companies will go to those lengths.
If you haven't had a chance to see my last entry (which was posted just a couple hours before my site went down on Friday) then please browse on over and read about the true purpose of CSS Naked Day, something I've noticed most people oblivious to.
Happy my site is back!
Everyone go switch to Site5!
LOL. Maybe I need Jem’s typo script.
