Wordpress 2.5 Upgrade

March 30th, 2008
Wordpress 2.5 (Brecker)

The upgrade to Wordpress 2.5 went quite smoothly! Quick installation with no errors. I don't mind the new admin panel style (although the orange color is not my fave) but I do love all the new little whizbangs of optimization and faster load times. One-click installs of plugins are awesome too.

I've added a couple of new little goodies around the site to make browsing more enjoyable. There is now a "recent posts/comments" below the current entry. Some shiny little buttons have appeared on the sidebar (view all snippets, view archives, etc) that you can click to go to more specific pages.

Probably my favorite new feature is the Feelin' Lucky? page, which you can reach by clicking the little four leaf clover next to the search box. Google-inspired, of course, it will generate a random post from my blog! But sorry, IE-users, the clover won't appear for you at the moment. The margins and floating in CSS weren't displaying correctly so I had to hide it from you for now. :(

I've also moved my Twitter updates to a little bubble at the top of the page instead of a box on the sidebar. I think it looks pretty cute up there! It should look ok in Firefox and IE.

On the backend side, the permalinks have changed to a friendlier output. Don't worry if you have previously linked any blog posts of mine on your site, they will automatically forward to the new link thanks to the Permalinks Migration plugin.

Last but not least, there is a new archives page along with a full tag cloud page for ease of use. I've also switched and installed a few new plugins to add more functionality for statistics (coming soon), usability (sitemaps, search, archives, etc) and fun stuff (random posts).

I'm totally not finished fixing up more little things on my site but I really couldn't hold off on keeping it closed any longer. I'll be touching up more features on the side in the coming weeks. :) Happy weekend to all!

Good job, I’ve been following you on Twitter. I’m going to take my blog from Typepad over to Wordpress, hopefully this week.

You’ve done an excellent job. Glad to hear the upgrade when smoothly. :)

Oh wow! You are so productive.

Wanna work on my site too?

Did you get LJ Crossposter working for you? When I went to activate my plug-ins it yelled at me…

Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.

Boo hooey!

I love WP 2.5!!! I still need to upgrade WP on my personal site but I’m working on a new site in my own language (Dutch — which will NOT replace s-e.org btw) and I installed it on there. I love it. :D I love the tag cloud page! Did you use a plug-in for that or did you add it manually? I love the Twitter box on the top. Anyway you did a great job on the layout and I absolutely LOVE the archives page!!! Did you use a plug-in for that as well??? I’m lovin’ it. :D You did a great job. Oh and I’m glad the site is back!! I missed it, I kept checking back yesterday to see if it was up, lol.

Oh Rachael, you know you do an amazing job yourself. :P

Hehe, I emailed you my reply but for anyone else curious: nope, I heard about that error before I installed 2.5 and have it deactivated for the time being. Hopefully it will get fixed soon! :(

@Nanda: LOL, your comment made me smile this morning, it’s so upbeat! Since I can’t quote the whole thing (hehe!) I’m just gonna reply. :)

Good luck on your new Dutch site! :D You’ll have to give me a link when you finish so I can go see! The tag cloud was actually added manually with the default WP template tags. I used one plugin for the archives page (the month/year part) called Smart Archives that is very customizable!

Aw, haha. Thanks for your quick reply! :D

And I’ll definitely give you the link!!! I’m currently writing content for it, but hopefully it will be finished by the end of the week.

And thanks for sharing that info about the plug-ins, it looks awesome!! And your layout is so original! Every time I visit your site it makes me smile, and no I am not joking! I just love your creativity and originality! I’ll be sure to check out that Smart Archives plug-in. Looks great!
